Kwan Um Europe's Dāna Campaign
December 2025: Introducing The Dāna Fund
A Project of the KUSZ European Office
In Buddhism, we call the spirit of giving Dāna.
Dāna paramita is a pillar of Buddhist spiritual development. It does not depend on the value of what is offered, only the practice of compassionate generosity. This means that everything that I have and everything that I am is not only for me, but for all beings.
The practice of Dāna is essential to sustaining our practice spaces, supporting our teachers, and ensuring that our retreats and programs remain affordable so that everyone, regardless of background or means, may benefit from KUSZ Europe’s offerings. When practicing Dāna we help ourselves as well as others.
In the spirit of the season, the European Office has decided to create a Special Projects Fund. This new Dāna fund will be dedicated to supporting emerging Zen Centers.
“Forget these three things— I, you, giving—
then you are practicing the generosity paramita.”

About the European Office’s Dāna Fund
This is a new fund which will be dedicated to supporting emerging Zen Centers.
What the EO does:
KUSZEu’s European Office now supports and funds student practice scholarships, regional events (Kyol Che), small stipends for the KUSZEu head teacher (currently Joeng Hye SSN) and monastics, Zen center support, and Primary Point magazine. It also maintains a modest endowment reserved for any emergencies encountered by its member centers and groups.
KUSZEu accomplishes a lot with minimal financial resources and a great deal of volunteer support. But it strives to help more. The European Teachers Group and the KUSZEu Board of Directors have agreed to cultivate and devote additional resources for the needs of smaller, emerging Zen centers and groups. Therefore, we are going to create a dedicated fund, seeded initially with €2000, for this purpose.
What we plan to do in the future:
In early 2026, KUSZEu will survey member centers and groups to learn more about what financial assistance they currently seek to expand and enhance their teaching and practice offerings. We will then endeavor to fund more projects with the funds we raise in this 2025 Dāna Campaign. We hope this will be a small but important initial step toward developing KUSZEu’s capacity to support the growth and well-being of emerging member centers.
Details about the 2025 Dāna Campaign
The European Office is aware that many Zen Groups and Teachers are sometimes in need of additional financial assistance so that they can fulfill their missions. Thus, the European Office has decided to create a Dāna Fund dedicated to supporting emerging Zen Centers and Teachers, as needed.
In 2025, we hope to raise €2000 to seed this fund.
