The European Council and the European Office
Communications and support for local sanghas of the Kwan Um School of Zen in Europe and for individual members is primarily through your local Abbot, Director and/or Guiding Teacher. In all cases where you need spiritual support or wish to ask any personal questions, your first call should be to your Guiding Teacher, who is there to help you. They will forward your concerns to the European Board of Trustees (Teachers Group) or the Council if your request needs their attention.
The Structure of the Kwan Um School of Zen in Europe
The Sangha in Europe is organized locally and nationally by students (with directors and abbots) under the guidance of Guiding Teachers who are members of the European Board of Trustees (Teachers Group).
The European Board of Trustees (Teachers Group) is the governing body of the Kwan Um School of Zen in Europe, with strategic and spiritual authority and functions; they meet annually.
The Head Teacher is the spiritual head of the European Kwan Um School of Zen (KUSZ/Eu), elected by the Board of Trustees every five years.
The Council represents the Board of Trustees and has a mandate from the members of our European school to govern and administrate the KUSZ/Eu. The Council consists of three teachers elected by the European Teachers Group and approved by the Meeting of Members every three years. The elected members choose one of them to head it.
The Council meets through skype or in person once a month or more often, as needed, and guides the actions and direction of the school as well of the European Office. Day-to-day matters of our KUSZ in Europe and Israel and management issues are considered, and courses of action chosen. The Council reports and refers matters to the Board of Trustees and to the Head Teacher.
The European Office (EO) for the Kwan Um School of Zen exists to serve the local and national Sanghas in Europe and Israel. It is the operational and executive board for KUSZ Europe, with members chosen by the Council.
The team is composed of Sangha members who work closely with the Council and are guided by the Council. They have job assignments according to the areas for which they are each responsible, currently Projects, Financial, Organization, Retreats, Internet, and Communications Directors.
